We haven't had one of these in a long time, so i challange everyone who is interested to write a Dramatic monologue. Here is an example that I wrote for my Brittish literature class last year:
A Warrior’s Death
Copyright S. Ombre 2005
I’m glad you made something special tonight,
And that our child has been put to bed.
This meal might be my last in this life,
And I want to spend it alone with you.
My lord has died, and I am set adrift;
Now the young lord is calling for my death.
The last of my livelihood is lost now;
I shall not see you again in this life.
Perhaps we shall meet again in the next.
Spend this life well, but do not forget me.
My body must go to the hanging soon,
But my spirit will stay here with you.
I will wait for you beyond death’s curtain,
And, when you join me there, we will journey
On the path to the next life and joy.
This meal shall most likely be my last, but
We should enjoy this short time together.
If you should kiss me as I leave the house,
It shall be the last time I touch your lips,
Unless something should change the young lord’s mind,
But I shall never see this house again.
Outside the door, the hangman is waiting
To lead me to the ancient gallows pole.
Once this meal is done, I will go with him,
And leave you here to live your life alone.
Perhaps you shall love again, perhaps not;
Just live your life to the fullest for me.
On Odin’s day, in his tree, I shall die;
My sacrifice shall be for you, not him,
And I shall watch over you till your death.
The clock strikes the ninth hour, I shall leave.
Mourn not for me, but live your life with joy.
I have one last request to make of you,
Take my sword and my bow, they are by our bed,
And when our son is old enough to fight,
Give them to him to revenge my death.
The young lord’s death will be more kind than mine,
A warrior’s death, by arrow shaft or blade.
But his spirit shall be taken by Tir,
In the afterlife, he shall be punished
For all the wrongs that he has done to us.
He shall die, and my son shall take his throne.
My rightful throne, my brother stole from me.
Keep my son safe, and by Tir’s hand, live well.
I shall wait for you my love, beyond death.
I hope that people will be interested in participating! Have fun with this one. I'll try to write another one (in my almost non-existent spare time).
