I fall in to several of those categories sadly, but most of them are around the second of third tier... not that that's much consolation!

One of the things that annoys me about magazines such as SFX is how they still cling to that idea of a "hierarchy", and the "clan" mentality ("I don't like Buffy, therefore anyone who does like it is stupid... I like Babylon 5, therefore anyone who doesn't like it is stupid."). Of course we all know that Mike is the best, but that doesn't mean we have to rub everyone's noses in it. :D

Obviously, by definition, writing fanfic is less creative than writing original fiction, but then I know that in the States, writers are often asked to submit "spec. scripts" for an established series to prove their writing skills, before being hired to write new stuff... so that might actually get a writer further in their chosen career than if they only wrote original work.

Of course very few "videogamers" would even consider themselves "geeks" in this country. It falls into that beer/porn/football category of "sad" things that "cool" people like. :roll:

Maybe you select the highest tier in which you belong. A Sci-Fi/Fantasy Lit fan can be a video gamer as well without losing his second-tier status, I would think. But, then again, perhaps it works in reverse, as well, such that if you write stories about furries you lose all status as a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Lit fan...

In any event, those of us who have writing or art in Prototype X can, technically, place ourselves in the top tier, correct?

No doubt that part of you which is the SF/Fantasy Lit fan despises the part of you that plays video games (and vice versa) so you're probably filled with a deep sense of self-loathing whichever side of the divide you fall into. :)

I certainly regret all of the time I wasted sat in front of a computer playing games... when I could have been sat in front of the computer writing stories. Neither is likely to get me much of a tan, but at least I have something to show for my efforts when I'm writing. Since most seven year olds can get better scores than me on every game ever invented, there isn't really any sense of accomplishment to be found there.

Sadly I've put myself in my stories, so that may drop me down a few tiers. It may all hang on how well I can draw breasts... 8O
