Druillet endpapers of Elric

Something probably few of you have seen - it occurred to me you might be interested - the end papers illustration (1 of 2) by Philippe Druillet of the original French bookclub edition of ELRIC in 1969:

I loved those Opta editions.. They also did Cornelius, The Ice Schooner and Warlord of th4 Air. Unfortunately they went bankrupt at a rather bad time for me! The fate of many other ambitious publishers, sadly.

That OPTA edition of ELRIC had two gorgeous end papers illustrations, and all that b&w art by Druillet at the end (which was later reused in YRAGAEL), but also a map of the world of Elric which I have never seen reproduced anywhere else.

Mike, did you ever see the YRAGAEL graphic novels? (There are two: YRAGAEL and URN LE FOU, and I think they were once translated in HEAVY METAL.) They start just like ELRIC - understandably considering their history - with a DREAMING CITY-like thread, then turn to Lovecraftian-type fiction fairly quickly.

In term of pure illustrative qualities, it is some of Druillet's best art, ever.

May I suggest that art fans explores the other links on that page? The Forest illustrations of C.L. Moore's SHAMBLEAU are just stunning.

I never saw the BASTABLE volume but I do have the one with FINAL PROGRAMME/ICE SCHOONER, but I'm not as fond of the art. It's early Siudmak ( http://www.siudmak.com/ ) and I'm not a big fan of his style though he's very prolific, and popular I suppose, in France.

No, I never saw the Druillet BDs. There were some legal problems in the early 70s between Druillet and Unicorn and a bit of a strain between us as a result (long since resolved). I had expected to see him this last time in Paris but we never were able to get our calendars together. I gather he also reused the Elric BDs which originlly appeared in Moi Aussi.

If someone could get you a copy of the few issues of HEAVY METAL that ran the translation of YRAGAEL in the 80s, I think you'd be very interested!

Druillet and Michel Demuth basically rewrote and expanded the version of ELRIC that had been done in '69 and took it into a different direction, sort of like what you did between THE DREAMING CITY and the first part of THE FINAL PROGRAMME, but YRAGAEL should be considered an alternate Elric of sorts.

I was able to find that YRAGAEL was serialized in the April 1982-January 1983 issues of HEAVY METAL.

Well worth locating as a curios addition to your bibliography.

Heavy Metal, I use to have a ton of those! But in the classic "mom throwing out comicbooks" - she threw them out! :(
