The two guitar solos are imaginative. Who is that inspired fellow?

That's lifted from the 'Chronicle of the Black Sword' video. I don't remember if Mike's in the video, but he's on the double CD. It's from the mid-80's.

Yes Mike is in the video doing most of the narration. It is a "must have" for any Moorcock completist. Mike also sings and throws signed copies of novels into the crowd during the encore. Great Stuff!!!
I saw the North American version of that tour and still have TCOTBS flyer to prove it.

It's Hammersmith Odeon, 1985. I was in the audience. It was okay, but there was a bit too much in the way of Huw Lloyd Langton's guitar wg for my taste. They put a lot of effort into the show though.

I saw Hawkwind last Thursday at the University of East Anglia: They're on very good form at the minute even if Dave Brock does have to sit down occasionally to get his breath back.

What I hadn't realised when I took those books to the gig was that people would grab at them until all that were left were bits of book!
I probably should have just left them on a table for people to take home with them as they left.

'Live Chronicles' was my first Hawkwind album. Mike, you had dedicated one of the EC books to Hawkwind and I dutifully went out and bought a Hawkwind record, in 1986 or so, the only one for sale in an area of several million people.

I hated it! It was way too 'metal' for me and you know in America what Heavy Metal had become was just really showbizzy, stupid pap like Kiss. Might as well listen to Manilow as that stuff. Anyway, it grew on me, I'm a sucker for fantasy lyrics, playful darkness, and there was just something...

As for Huw's playing, I liked and still like the melodicism which was certainly missing from most guitar work in the eighties and seems to be missing again.

Sorry for reminiscing and going off topic! Just a great band.

Huw's a fine guitarist. Hawkwind, of course, aren't a metal band, though people sometimes assume they are. The term most commonly used is 'prog-rock'. Although the band's loud and produces a 'wall of sound' effect, it's still rooted in a musical tradition which doesn't have a lot to do with metal. As, of course, you now know! I think one of the reasons the band was about the only 'hippy' band respected by the punks was because it stuck close to its ideals as a 'people's band' and never compromised or transformed itself into a 'glam-rock' band the way many did at the time. There was very rarely any posturing and if some of the gigs were occasionally a touch shambolic, that was better than being too smooth. Hawkwind refused to go on TV and lip-sych, for instance. Their deal was either the gig was done live or it wasn't done at all.

There was a time when I would go to every Hawkwind gig I could physically get to and this was the precise reaon: you never knew what you were going to get. Some nights it could be average to say the least, but on the good ones, nothing could touch them. I'll take shambolic over pre-packaged sterility any day.

I agree that Huw is a good gutarist, but he plays over eveything else to the detriment of the wall of sound. When I listen to Hawkwind I want to hear Dave Brock's guitar thrashing away at the front, preferably with a flanger and any other effects he happens to have to hand turned all the way up. I prefer Huw's guitar work on the more restrained numbers such as 'Motorway City'.

I agree that Huw's lead solo's can be a little overwhelming at times but dont ride him off completely. Motorway City is an excellent song, as is Sleep Of A Thousand Tears and the diminishing guitar effects at the end of Void City.The live version of Dreaming City off of the Chaos dvd could bring a tear to the eye of any true Elric fan.

Huw is a great chap and a very accomplished lead guitarist. He always did, and still does add to the overall Hawkwind sound. Alot also rests on the way that the music is produced as to whether the sound is ultimately as pleasing as it could be. Moonglum has been a favourite of ours for a long time, but recently Dragons and Fables (Child on the run orignally) is now played most often. I also enjoy the "dueling banjos" effect of Dave and Huw's guitars on Shot Down/Motorway City.

I only got to sit down for a pint with Huw once and he seemed to be a very polite, reserved individual.
You guys put a bug in m'ead at 4:00 am t'day.

I too have seen Huwey play live and find him to be an excellent musician. I know that Dave and Huw's styles dont compliment each other 100% of the time but dont make him out to be the Milli-Vanilli of psychedelia.

Hey Voilodian, are you really living near Niagara Falls? We are at the opposite end now in Vancouver. I visited Niagara falls when I was about 21. Arrived at midnight and had no where to sleep so I ended up in a sleeping bag and woke up soaked from the spray!
Yes, Huw is a very nice guy. I saw him one night at a pub in Hendon near where we were living. We all got talking and ended up having dinner and playing music at his place. A very decent, up front, down to earth, friendly guy and also his wife Marion. I think they are living near Oxford now.

I live less than an hour to the North of the Falls. (I was working there today.) I've worked on a lot of the Hotels, Casinos...bla,bla.. down there. It's a breathtaking view from the air when the sun is rising.
