Image Gallery Gets a Second Wind

H'lo friends,

You know, the Image Gallery is growing by leaps and bounds and if you haven't been by there recently, [broken link]you should go

I've just recently started putting regular hours back into the Gallery. Most of my time has been spent organizing the wealth of images into a (hopefully) intuitive archive. In the interest of helping fans find a specific type of image, I have listed below the various Albums, each represented in their respective nested positions. I hope this helps you out a bit and I will update this post whenever changes are made to the Gallery.


We encourage you to [broken link]peruse the Gallery and, should you find that you possess a Moorcock-related image that is not represented, add it by uploading it to [broken link]this Album, located inside the Limbo Album. You can do this by going into the Album and selecting "add photos" from the drop-down menu in the top-right of your screen. Note that you MUST be logged in to upload images. You need only upload the largest version of your image; the software will create the thumbnail. Also, be sure to give your image a caption!

It is my task to make sure images end up in the right locations, so you should see your image move from Limbo within a few days of uploading it. Use the chart below to determine where it might have ended up.

Some examples: a piece of Elric art you created yourself would go into Reader Submissions -> Reader Art. If your Elric piece was a photo-manipulation of what some actor might look like as our favorite tormented Albino, then I would put it into Reader Submissions -> Elric Movie Speculative Photos. A Jim Cawthorn sketch of Elric would go into Artists -> James Cawthorn, whereas a Jim Cawthorn sketch of Michael Moorcock would go into Michael Moorcock -> Portraits. For those of you with ink embedded in your dermis, we even have a special section just for you! Feel free to show off your chaotic tats!

So go check out the Gallery and, if you are so motivated, add some images and help us make it the best archive of Moorcock-related imagery on the 'net!

By the way, we've set up a "Readers" Album into which I will place any pix members wish to upload of themselves. So those of you who are not camera-shy should gift us with a photo or two, that we might easier recognize you on the street. :twisted:

In the interest of setting an example, I have uploaded a picture of myself to start things off. I'm definitely not one of the beautiful people, yet there is my mug for all to see. If I can do it, so can you!

Yes, I'm a Photoshop professional by trade. No, I didn't Photoshop the picture of myself one bit. (I would, however, be happy to do so for any MWM member who desired it, if it would help populate the Readers Album. Heh, heh.)

With the encouragement of Berry, PWV and others I've been submitting scans over the last few weeks and will be submitting more on a regular basis whenever I can. For newbies or anyone who doesn't visit the Gallery regularly I should say that those who manage the gallery have made an excellent job of reordering the Novels and Anthologies section. Each title now has it's own album so that you'll find all the different editions of a particular book together. New scans will be found sitting in the Limbo area before they are moved to the relevant section. I'd also encourage anyone who can to scan and upload their own items for others to see - it would be nice to have some foreign language Moorcock editions appearing, more oddities and rare items etc.

Excellent work on the image gallery there, amigos.

I’ve added a couple of Science Fantasy covers, and I’m happy to add anything else I can that’s useful, e.g. fill in gaps in Aral’s amazing collection (if indeed there are any!).

It’s been noted there are crossovers in categorising the books, sometimes. An album of all the Orion EC books in order, all the Millenium EC books, all the Grafton Elrics etc might be good, as well as an alphabetical listing.

And yes, let’s see some of those overseas editions please, fellow Miscellanists. Post 'em if ya got 'em!

Organizing the Image Gallery is a rather precarious job, as the software doesn't allow for cross-referencing of images.

It's also a rather tedious job, as the software doesn't make it easy to reorder/move images or albums. For example, if I want to put albums in alphabetical order (which I did recently inside the Books By Michael Moorcock Album), I have to know numerically what position to move each album to; the interface doesn't list each album by name when you select "Reorder Album," only by number. And of course, once you change the order, the numeric positions change as well!

Finally, I am by no means an expert on every single book Mike has written, so I am apt to put things in the wrong places from time to time. :?

I only relay all this so that you can understand why the Image Gallery isn't better organized than it is. I'm not whining or complaining. In fact, I enjoy working on the Gallery. I just want to make readers aware of its limitations.

The alphabetical listing is a great idea. I’d assumed it just happened, didn’t realise it was a lot of work. Nice one. :)

The software has its limitations, I see, but it is easy to use and pretty darn quick compared to other similar things I’ve attempted! Thanks to Berry and PWV for introducing me to it.

It wouldn’t need actual cross-referencing to set up albums like “Orion EC series� etc, would it? Just uploading images again. I may try my luck at some of this one day, but I don’t have all the EC omnibus books, for example.

No, you're right. It would just require the time to set up all the new albums. And there's no reason the same image couldn't be uploaded to more than one album, other than storage space. Maybe Berry has different feelings on this, I don't know.

And I agree the interface isn't exactly torturous to use or anything, it just has certain minor annoyances (like the numeric order thing).

Overall, though, I have a blast. Scanning is indeed therapeutic. So is filling out new albums with images, writing up captions, etc. Plus, I get to see all the cool Moorcockian artwork from over the years.

By the way, many of the book cover images are rather small. If you notice a smaller image and happen to have the same book, I'd love to replace those smaller pix with larger ones. Just a thought.

Here are my thoughts.

If there were 100 or fewer books that were duplicates (say, 50 pairs), we wouldn't really take a hit. If it were more, we would begin to get concerned. Consider this:

50 pairs means twice as much time, space, effort and etc. The effect would not be cross-referencing. Real cross-referencing would give us the ability to look at covers by publisher, artist, title, year, collection, country and etc.

Our best case scenario is for the software to improve so that we can do real cross referencing, and believe me, if that development occurred, I'd quickly flip the Gallery over into that kind of system. I predict in the next year ot two that might be available.

So, I leave it to you guys to decide for yourselves. I'm not indifferent; I feel you guys should do it the way you want to manage it.

One thing though (and believe you may have touched on this a bit in a recent e-mail to us CEs): let's say we decide that the Michael Moorcock the Man Album needs further subdivision. Say the pix of Mike from each decade are separated into their own albums. Wouldn't that break the path to the pic of Mike from 1957 in the Bio? I know for a fact that I've already busted links to images from certain threads with all this reorganizing.

Hey PWV! Remember that seemingly idle boast a while back on another thread? Well it was no idle boast! I have 36 (count 'em!) images to upload, and, as this seems to be a rather slow process, I will be uploading them as and when I log on over the next week.
There are a few new titles to the gallery among the images, some back covers which I thought warranted inclusion, some different editions of various titles and some higher resolution ones of titles which only seemed to be thumbnail size.
It's been a labour of love and one I've enjoyed, because it's given me a grand tour of Mr. M's book covers.

*whew* Well, I'm only just now getting somewhat caught up. Between the Burroughsania stuff, the Jazz Fan stuff, the Eldritch stuff, your book covers, other miscellaneous submissions... it's been a labor of love to be sure! And yeah, quite enjoyable. I'm astonished at all the different book covers.

Which brings me to: Mike, did you personally approve the art for every cover to adorn your books?
